What does the initial naturopathic visit entail?

Traditionally, an initial consultation with a Naturopathic Doctor is approximately 90 minutes long and includes a thorough health history and discussion, as well as a physical examination. Since Naturopathic Doctors are interested in all aspects of health, including the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual, the initial interview is lengthy in order to obtain as much information about you as possible; this enables your Naturopathic Doctor to arrive at a proper assessment and create the best plan for you. At IPTC, however, we also offer a half hour initial consultation for those that are new to naturopathic medicine. The half hour initial consultation is learn a little bit more about naturopathic medicine, to uncover the chief health concerns of the patient, and to develop an idea of how you and naturopath can best work together. It is not intended to replace the 90 minute consultation, but is geared towards those who are still deciding if naturopathic medicine is an avenue they wish to pursue.
Are naturopathic consultations covered by OHIP?
Treatment by a naturopathic doctor is not at the present covered by OHIP, however most extended health care plans do cover the cost of your visits. It's a good idea to check at your workplace to find out whether your benefits package includes naturopathic medicine.

How Are ND’s Trained?
Naturopathic Doctors take a minimum of three years pre-medical studies at university, followed by four years of full-time studies at a recognized college of naturopathic medicine. The education encompasses basic medical and clinical sciences, naturopathic principles and therapeutics, and 1500 hours of supervised clinical experience. Graduates must pass rigorous Ontario and North American board exams in order to be eligible to practice as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine.
Is Naturopathic Medicine Regulated?
Naturopathic medicine has been regulated in Ontario since 1925 under the Drugless Practitioners Act, and is currently in the process of being included in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), a more recent act that regulates other health care professions in Ontario such as medical doctors, chiropractors, and midwives.
